MAUS I & II Activity (Project)

Part 1:

Maus 1

Chapter 1 – This is a graphic memoir. A graphic memoir tells a person’s life through text and drawings. Why does Art Spiegelman use mice instead of people to portray the characters in the story? What do the mice represent?

Art Spiegelman used mice to portray people because mice are rodents that people don’t like, humans are disgusted by them. That’s why Spiegelman used mice so he could represent the Jews position during the Holocaust.

Chapter 2 – Why does Ms. Stefanska go to jail? What role did Anja play in Ms. Stefanska’s going to jail?

Ms. Stefanska was caught having notes that dealt with Communists in her store. Anja was the cause of Ms. Stefanska going to jail because she told her to hide the notes that Anja was trying to hide from the police who were gonna search her home.

Chapter 3 -What does Vladek mean on page 50, when he says, “Well at least I did something.” Do you believe that he is justified in feeling this way? Explain.

Vladek felt like he had to do something at least, even if it was killing one person because he thought that the war was too much and wanted to make sure he wouldn’t suffer nor would his son.

Chapter 4 – Although Jews were allowed only limited rations under the Nazi occupation, Vladek manages to circumvent these restrictions for a while. What methods does he use to support himself and his family?

Vladek took advantage of the people who owed him and he deals in black marketing.

Chapter 5 – How did Vladek care for Anja after the destruction of the Srodula ghetto? Contrast his behavior toward his first wife, during the worst years of the war, with the way he now treats Mala.

Vladek was very caring and loving about Anja, he worried about her all the time and loved her truly. After marrying Mala he treats her like if she wasn’t even his wife, he doesn’t spend his money or give her the attention she should get because he thinks that Mala is after her money.

Chapter 6 – Why does Artie call his father a murderer? Is he justified? Who else has he called a murderer, and why?

Artie calls his father a murderer because he destroyed the last memories of his mother. Artie used t0 call his mother a murder because she killed herself leaving his son alone.

Part 2:

Maus 2

Write an overall impression of what Vladek went through in Auschwitz and how it changed him. How has it affected Artie and Francoise?

Vladek went through hell during the Holocaust. He experienced fear, starvation, hopelessness, and more uneasy feelings. Vladek had been struggling to keep himself and Anja alive. They had a hard time hiding, finding food and staying together. Every since then Vladek has been rational about everything, from food to money. Since Mala left Vladek, his son Artie and Artie’s girlfriend, Francoise stayed with Artie to see how he can live by himself in the future. They discover how tight he was with his money, food, pills, and other things in his household. After what Artie’s father had been through he’s been always cautious on what he would do each day and how to preserve things.

Book Review #10| The Lost Boy| Dave Pelzer

Book Review #10

Book: The Lost Boy (Trilogy to The Boy Called “It”)

The_Lost_Boy

Author: Dave Pelzer

Rating(1-10): 9

I gave this book a 9 because of how it really shows you how Dave struggled and how his life was proceeding after he got away from his mother. It gives you detail by detail about everything that happens and it makes you feel like if you were experiencing it as well. I really thought this book had a real emotional aura because it gave me a really good reading experience. *Thumbs up*

Synopsis (+opinions):

The novel, The Lost Boy  is basically how a young boy faces the abuse of his mother and how he tries to escape from her. Ever since he turned six his mother changed all at once and started treating him like a rag doll. It’s seriously insanely inhumane how this boy is treated. From beatings to starvations to being emotionally corrupted, you name it.

The little guy finally finds some kind of courage to escape from his home. He goes through a short journey but ends up with a police. After his parents actually allowed him to go to school, a few days later a teacher finds out what his mother’s been doing to him. The same police from before help him get away from his mother. Just after the teacher tells, when school ends the police takes him to a foster care.

Aunt Mary, the owner of the foster care asks what happened to him, but he could never really tell them what mother has been doing to him. He thinks it’s all his fault and that he deserved everything that’s happened to him. It’s just sad how he takes the blame for it when he doesn’t even know what really happened to him in the past.

A whole lot of stuff happened after he was given to Lilian and Rudy Catanze, his foster parents. Did I mention that he’s been treated so badly that he doesn’t even remember his OWN NAME! Sigh…. Just makes me so upset!! (/T0T)/ Anyways he meets a boy that claims to be his friend but just uses him for his own benefit. -(*^*)- Aish makes me wanna just rip the book but it’s not mine so… lol. These two almost set the classroom on fire and the boy blamed it all on poor little Dave (which is his name). He ends up in Juvenile Hall.

Few years past and Dave was released, but he was put in multiple foster homes. After more years he decides to join the U.S Air Force instead of going to high school for slow learners. Dave never gave up on his abusive mother and hoped she would love him again but sadly that never came… The only person that gave him what he really wanted was Alice, his new foster mother.

To find out what happens next to little ole’ Dave read the next book called, A Man Named Dave. Hope you liked my review! This book was really amazing, I literally cried on just the first chapter no lies.

Book Review #7: Cured| Bethany Wiggins

Book Review #7

Book: Cured

Author: Bethany Wiggins

5 Cured

I bought Cured on scholastics.com for $6.99 (US)

🙂

Let’s make this short and sweet. \(^u^)/

Most of you know that the book Cured is a sequel to the novel Stung. I recommend you guys to read the first book, Stung, before you read Cured, BUT don’t take away just yet. Promise you there are NO SPOILERS what so ever, my book review is short and sweet. 😉

In Cured, the point of view changes. Instead of the main character Fiona from the last book, now it’s Jacqui, a side character. To be honest I was kind of disappointed that the point of view changes but the novel was still really good.

Let me tell you this. What you’re about to enter in Cured is a whole lot of ROMANCE... gihihi

I’m that type of girl, so if you’re not well bye. lol

So anyways in the book Jacqui has been disguised as a male just to survive around this world. There’re not many females left in Jacqui’s environment because of the raiders. They are the men who get drunk with power, they basically rape any type of female human they see.

With her disguise as a guy, she’s set off looking for her brother Dean who suddenly disappears out of the picture after escorting Fiona and Jonas’ mother to safety. She gets help from Fiona, Fiona’s boyfriend, Bowen, and Fiona’s twin brother, Jonas.  Along the way she meets Kevin. Somehow this guy knows things about Jacqui that not many people know, pretty creepy…

They form a relationship in search of her brother, Dean. When Kevin and Jacqui meet it’s just a huge fire ball of romance hitting you.

They hear rumors about a safe place called Wyoming. All of them assume that’s where Dean is and other people so they journey over there.

Hmmm, you guys should read it, I’ll keep quiet for now. ;p

Look forward to the situations they get stuck in and how they get out, it somehow always ends up nowhere related to what situation they were in the first place.
